Abstract:
Background and Aim: One of the problems of medical knowledge in the field of infertility that has become common is the phenomenon of multiple births and birth defects. Doctors in infertility clinics try to reduce the problem to an acceptable level by reducing the number of fetuses. Therefore, considering the importance and necessity of fetal reduction, the main purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of this phenomenon and the need to be aware of them.
Materials and Methods: This research is of theoretical type. The research method is descriptive-analytical and with a jurisprudential-legal approach. Information was collected in a library by referring to documents, books and legal and jurisprudential articles.
Findings: The results of this study show that fetal reduction, if the number of embryos transferred to the mother's uterus is more than one, although in some cases has a moral, jurisprudential and legal justification, has undeniable negative effects on mother, fetus and society.
Ethical considerations: In all stages of writing the present study, while respecting the originality of the texts, honesty and trustworthiness have been observed.
Conclusion: The results indicate that the adoption of an approach commensurate with medical developments in the field of infertility treatment, in order to determine the legal and medical criteria, including the restriction of transfer of more than one fetus to the mother's uterus by physicians, to prevent fetal reduction and its negative effects, is a necessary and requires legislation.
